The Adopt module is where the first workloads move to the cloud. The Adopt module can have two fundamental flavors:

  • Adopt - Migrate
  • Adopt - Innovate

Adopt-Migrate focuses on moving an existing workload to the cloud as simply as possible. The term lift-and-shift is often used here.

Adopt-Innovate covers the complete area of creating new workloads in the cloud. The goal of Adopt-Innovate is to subject the workload to innovation and leverage the benefits of cloud and cloud-native patterns.

A good analogy is applying one of the Rs from the 5 Rs for a workload on its way to the cloud (cf. Cloud rationalization)
